A software developer sells you software. A hardware shop sells you a device.
I don't start from a specialty and look for a reason to use it. A problem that looks like a software problem sometimes resolves better with a sensor and a rule than with an application. A problem that looks like it needs a device sometimes just needs two existing tools connected properly. Deciding that requires looking at the whole picture before committing to a piece of it.
In practice, this means
- The investigation happens before the proposal, not after.
- Software, hardware, infrastructure, and integrations are all on the table from the start.
- The answer is sometimes 'you don't need custom software at all.'
- I say so when a simpler, cheaper option solves it just as well.
Building it is rarely the hard part.
The hard part is figuring out what's worth building, what it costs to run, who has to maintain it, and what rule, policy, or edge case it runs into that a spec sheet won't mention. That's engineering judgment, and it applies before a single line of code gets written — not just during implementation.
